East Deer Township is a township located in Allegheny
County, Pennsylvania. It lies approximately 20 miles northeast of
Pittsburgh along the Allegheny River. East Deer is in County Council
District and is part of the Deer Lakes School
District.Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total
area of 6.8 km˛ (2.6 mi˛). 6.0 km˛ (2.3 mi˛) of it is land and 0.8 km˛
(0.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 11.83% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,362 people, 606 households, and
350 families residing in the township. The population density is
227.6/km˛ (590.3/mi˛). There are 682 housing units at an average
density of 114.0/km˛ (295.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the township is
96.84% White, 1.91% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.15%
Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 1.03% from
two or more races. 0.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of
any race.
There are 606 households out of which 23.4% have children under the
age of 18 living with them, 41.4% are married couples living together,
12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.2% are
non-families. 37.1% of all households are made up of individuals and
16.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The
average household size is 2.16 and the average family size is 2.82.
In the township the population is spread out with 18.8% under the age
of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64,
and 23.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41
years. For every 100 females there are 81.8 males. For every 100
females age 18 and over, there are 77.2 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $30,078, and the
median income for a family is $38,839. Males have a median income of
$28,894 versus $24,792 for females. The per capita income for the
township is $17,108. 7.9% of the population and 5.4% of families are
